Ammonia Leak

Nine people were taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after an ammonia leak at Pilgrim's Pride in Nacogdoches. Three of the plant employees and USDA workers were tested for exposure. All of them have now been released.

A Pilgrim's Pride spokesman says a safety release valve opened for about two minutes. The refrigeration malfunction happened outside the plant, but a fan drew the ammonia inside.

City management helped with a partial evacuation. The plant was back up and running after an hour and a half.
