Local Leaders Are Determined To Stop Abuse

A former Trinity County sheriff's deputy accused of beating an inmate will be retried. Marshall Scott Taylor's four-day trial ended Friday with a hung jury.

Inmate abuse is a problem in East Texas, and local leaders do everything to stop it. Plenty of inmates file bogus reports of abuse, but many claims are real. There's only one way to find out the truth.

John C. Morrison, president of the Nacogdoches Tri-County NAACP, said, "We do a thorough investigation [and] try to interview witnesses that might have witnessed some of the things that they are alleging."

Many jail officials who abuse inmates are not indicted by a grand jury because most assaults happen in a cell where there are no witnesses.
