The Red Cross in Lufkin had a "thank you luncheon" Thursday for its heroes.
Donations started pouring in a couple months ago once the annual Heroes Campaign kicked off, but once Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast, even more donors gave to the agency.
Every year, the Heroes Campaign raises money to help the Red Cross help folks in need. Donations have exceeded this year's Heroes Campaign goal.
The group raised $10,000 over the last four days alone.
Board chairman, James Flournoy, said, "It's been overwhelming with people volunteering and bringing in water and clothes. We've had a lot of volunteers come in because we only have two full time service people located in Lufkin. The number of calls responding to shelter needs has been overwhelming."
