Buckner Children and Family Services Joins Disaster Relief Efforts

Buckner Children and Family Services of Deep East Texas is collecting in-kind donations to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina seeking refuge in the region.
The following items may be delivered to Buckner Family Place at 3402 Daniel McCall Drive in Lufkin between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays:diapers and wipes, baby food and formula, non-perishable food, bottled water, blankets and pillows, toiletries, phone cards, gift cards to local stores, and new shoes. All donations will be distributed directly to hurricane survivors.
“The mission of Buckner is to assist in the healing and restoration of children and families in challenging life situations,” said Judy Morgan, executive director, Buckner Children and Family Services–Deep East Texas. “Certainly the evacuees are facing unimaginable challenges, and we want to do whatever we can to ease the burden for them. Though not a disaster relief organization, Buckner has been providing food, clothing, shelter, and care to people in need since its inception in 1879. Our prayers go out to those devastated by this national tragedy.”
In addition to humanitarian aid and counseling, Buckner is working with Love INC and other shelters to provide emergency housing.
Lufkin is one of five Buckner sites designated to receive in-kind disaster relief donations, including Beaumont, Houston, Dallas, and Longview. Buckner is also shipping thousands of new shoes, shoelaces, and socks to evacuees in Houston and Baton Rouge, La.
