Lufkin PD identifies man killed in Friday's auto-motorcycle wreck, 1 person charged

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Police Department has released the name of the motorcyclist who was killed in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred on South Medford Drive early in the morning of April 13.

Jessica Pebsworth, a spokeswoman for the Lufkin Police Department, said that they made contact with the man's family on Tuesday. The victim in the wreck has been identified as Steven Morton, 60, of Lufkin.

According to a previous East Texas News story, Jesse Antonio Huerta, 30, of Lufkin, was arrested and charged with second-degree felony intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle, second-degree felony accident involving injury or death, and three traffic-related misdemeanor charges. His collective bond amount has been set at $21,848.41.

The wreck occurred in the 1600 block of South Medford drive at about 1 a.m. on the morning of April 13.

An 18-wheeler driver that witnessed the wreck told officers that the victim, who was on a motorcycle, was in front of him in the center lane when Huerta passed the 18-wheeler and switched lanes on top of the motorcycle driven by Morton near the Dernman Avenue exit, according to the Lufkin Police Department.

The 18-wheeler driver tried to keep Huerta on the scene, but Huerta fled the scene on foot. Huerta tried to hide in a nearby wooded area, but he was quickly located after Lufkin PD officers arrived on the scene.

Morton died at the scene of the wreck.
