There is not much more that can bring a smile to the face of Dr. Larry Phillips than seeing student-athletes succeed on the field and in the class room.
Phillips will be honored on Thursday by the school for his long-time support of the baseball and softball programs when the school renames the facility the "Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex" when the team plays Panola College. Phillips envisioned the complex years ago and was instrumental in pushing it forward in 2008.
"It is special," Phillips said. "Anything with your name on it is a special honor but I emphasize again that it is the Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex named for the Angelina College family and also because we always wanted these fields to be a family atmosphere with the picnic tables and park like setting."
The fields held their opening day ceremonies on Feb.6, 2010. Eight years later the fields have played host to thrilling games and was the home to the 2014 NJCAA World Series Softball Champions.
"There have been good memories on these fields," Phillips said. "We have only had three coaches in the school's history so lots of good memories around these fields."
A special ceremony will take place at 5:45 with the first pitch going out at 6 pm.The first 200 fans through the gates will receive commemorative t-shirts, and the first 200 children ages seven and under will receive wiffle balls and bats.
