BROADDUS, TX (KTRE) - Authorities in San Augustine County are investigating a bank robbery in Broaddus.
Deputies were called around 10 a.m. in regards to the robbery in progress at the Compass Bank at 411 TX-147 in Broaddus.
According to Sheriff Robert Cartwright, when deputies arrived, witnesses gave a description of the suspect saying he was a black male, wearing a dark-colored hoodie. He reportedly had a gun and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
"He had a firearm with him and brandished the firearm," Cartwright said. "And, at this point, the employees gave him the money that he was asking for."
The bank's camera system was not functioning properly according to Sheriff Cartwright.
Nobody was hurt, but residents Wandy Peters said that the crime really worried her.
"Well, it's scary," Peters said. "It's scary anytime. You know, they could come in here and knock us in the head. I kind of locked our doors for a little while because we didn't know where the robber was and called 911."
Peters said she first heard about the robbery from another resident, who she said had only been feet away from the suspect.
"We were in the kitchen, and Megan hollered that this man had come in," Peters said. "He was really pale and shaky. And, he said the bank had just been robbed. He had been in a red, dodge truck and was in the drive thru and, apparently, the tellers told him to leave because the bank was being robbed."
Deputies are currently searching for the suspect. Angelina County and Zavalla Police are both assisting in the search.
Crime Stoppers released information on the robbery saying the suspect was wearing a camouflage jacket, black gloves, and a fluorescent yellow top, carrying a gray and black backpack.
The vehicle the suspect fled in appears to be a silver mid-2000s Cadillac DeVille.
Investigators said the robber displayed a silver and black semi-automatic handgun and that his modus operandi (MO) matched that of the robbery committed Friday, April 13, in Diboll. The suspect from the Diboll robbery is a black male who wore a "Just Do It" hoodie, dark-colored shorts, a blue hard hat, sunglasses, and a bright-yellow safety vest. His vehicle was described as a mid-sized, four-door car.
