National Guardsmen from eight different states are being deployed to New Orleans. Some of those troops are trained military policeman from East Texas.
Thousands of area soldiers are already helping displaced victims of Katrina. More will leave over the next few days. They'll help with everything from rescue efforts to evacuation procedures.
Major General Mike Taylor said, "They'll be doing logistics operations. There are helicopters involved in emergency evacuation, communications, recovering people; also, the air support operations from the Air National Guard as well."
A group of National Guardsmen left for Houston Friday morning to help evacuees in the Astrodome.
