NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A Swedish fitness craze has made its way to Nacogdoches.

If you haven't heard of "plogging," you soon will as individuals to newly formed clubs around the globe are plogging.

East Texas News met up with a group of ploggers Thursday in Nacogdoches.
    .
Plogging may become the most googled word yet. Andrea Tate said what?

"I'm clogging. I'm blogging," Tate, a new plogger, said. "What am I doing exactly here?"

Caroline Garner, the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition physical activity committee chair, has picked up on the lingo.

"The official Swedish term is "plocka upp,'" Garner said. "It appeals to me because I'm half Swedish."

Simply put, plogging is jogging or walking while picking up litter. The activity is right on track for the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition.

"You're getting fitness for yourself by getting out and moving, and then you're getting the satisfaction of beautification of your community," Garner said.

Exercise ingenuity allows ploggers to burn more calories than just running by that empty plastic bottle or candy wrapper.

"If you want to do more squatting, you can do that," said Kelly Daniel, an HNC member and a plogger. "Maybe with your squats you can incorporate a spring or a few springs while you're at it. And then there's always the nice bending over, stretching, yoga."

Daniel sighed and reached for the sky.

"Now these ladies are joggers. I'm more of a walker. So you're going to help me learn how to plog while walking," said the East Texas News reporter. "Oh, here, let's go. One, two, three, lunge. Is that right, Caroline? One, two, three, lunge. It's as simple as that."

The Swedes began the activity when too much plastic was found lying around. That problem is universal.

"Whenever we can find a plastic bottle or any amount of plastic, and we can save that from entering into our watershed we're doing a good service," said Jocelyn Moore, a Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition.
