TRINITY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Trinity County deputy's stop early Monday has led to immigration officials taking in 16 people believed to be illegal immigrants.
Sheriff Woody Wallace said the deputy stopped a Ford Expedition at 2:19 a.m. on State Highway 94 in the Glendale area.
"It appeared to be a little more than just an original traffic stop when they had 16 people in a SUV that can only fit 6 people," Wallace said.
Wallace said the deputy realized he was likely dealing with illegal immigrants so officials with ICE were called to the sheriff's office.
According to Wallace this isn't a crime Trinity County deals with everyday.
Wallace said ICE officials ran fingerprints on all 16 and many came back with serious felony records, including murder.
"There were several of them that had very lengthy criminal histories ranging from child molesting all the way up to murder. So that's not been confirmed yet that's just what we saw in the preliminary investigation," said Wallace.
Wallace said they also found man made weapons, cash, and multiple cell phones.
At this time all 16 are being held in ICE's custody for questioning.
