DPS: One confirmed dead in Polk County wreck on Hwy 59

POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The Diboll Police Department is reporting that a major wreck with injuries has just occurred in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 59 in Polk County.

At 8 p.m., DPS released the following statement, confirming the death of one person in the wreck.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers investigated a two vehicle crash this afternoon on US 59 about two miles north of Corrigan.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates at about 3:30 p.m., a 2003 Ford pickup was traveling north on US 59. The pickup reportedly hydroplaned and slid through the grass median and struck a southbound 2013 Hyundai passenger car.
The driver of the pickup was transported to CHI St. Luke's Hospital in Livingston for treatment.
The driver of the passenger car was transported to CHI St. Luke's Hospital in Lufkin. A passenger in the Hyundai was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Polk County Justice of the peace.
The identities of the individuals involved in the crash are not available at this time.
This crash remains under investigation.

The Diboll Police Department posted on its Facebook page that the wreck is in the area of Piney Creek near Corrigan.

"Expect traffic to slow, and there will be delays," the Facebook post stated. "For now, the highway is closed southbound."

East Texas News has reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety for more details on the crash.

Rhonda Oaks, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said that crews are working to clear the crash site, and because the southbound lanes are blocked, the traffic is heavy.

"Expect delays," Oaks said.
