Stewart Regional Blood Center is encouraging its employees and the public to make a financial donation to help the employees and families of the New Orleans Blood Center rebuild their lives.
ABC, America’s Blood Center, is a national organization and has created a fund to specifically help the employees of the New Orleans Blood Center. As a member of ABC, Stewart Regional Blood Center has decided to make this fund a priority.
Along with the rest of the great town of New Orleans, The Blood Center there was destroyed. Their employees along with the rest of the town are without jobs and homes.
Lorie Schenck, Director of Marketing and Communications stated that, “This is a specific way Stewart Regional Blood Center can help to rebuild the lives of those who have saved so many through their profession.”
If you would like to donate to the New Orleans Blood Center fund, please take your donation to your local Stewart Regional Blood Center facility or send your donations to the Foundation for America’s Blood Centers, 725 15th St. NW, STE 700, Washington, DC 2005. (Please make a note in the memo section, “Gift for The New Orleans Blood Center”) Make checks payable to the Foundation for America’s Blood Centers.
In the wake of hurricane Katrina, many people are reminded of the ongoing need for donated blood. Everyday East Texas needs approximately 150 units of blood just to supply local demand.
Schenck stated, “We need to be able to keep our blood supply in the “Good” category with a three day supply so that in the event of a disaster such as Katrina, we are prepared to help.”
Currently Stewart Regional Blood Center only has approximately one day’s supply to service the 30 hospitals Stewart provides for in East Texas. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be in general good health, weigh 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old. Eligible donors can donate whole blood every 56 days (about eight weeks) or donate platelets every two weeks.
