Pack ready to fill void left by graduation of Isaiah Phillips

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - When Isaiah Phillips walked off the field of a Round 4 loss to Longview in December of last year, head coach Todd Quick knew he was losing something special.

"Isaiah carried the load for us last year," Quick said.  He was a 2,000 yard rusher. We have been here since 1995 and have only had one other back do that is something special you don't have every year."

Phillips is leaving Lufkin after graduation in a few weeks to play college ball at the University of Louisiana Monroe. He will be joined by his teammate Malik Jackson.

For the past three weeks, The Panthers have been working out in Spring Football mode. it is a time for the coaches to see what they have. Jackson's loss should be filled by Ja'Lynn Polk. The running game however could see some new looks.

"We've answered some of the  questions on the holes that we have," Quick said. "It can change in August if some kids have a great summer. We may have more than one guy do it in the running game. We have a lot of promise with the backs we are looking at. I don't have a set back yet. We will know in August, maybe in week one."

The Panthers will take the field on final time this spring on Monday night for the annual Lufkin panther Spring game. Kickoff for the game is 6pm. The Panthers will start workouts again in August and then on August 31 will travel to Longview for the first game of the 2018 season.
