NEWTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 63-year-old Deweyville man died Wednesday after the pickup he was working on fell on him, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles said that the man has been identified as Oscar Almendarez, of Deweyville.
Rowles said that the 911 call about a truck on a man came in at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies and first responders from the Deweyville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
When NCSO deputies got to the scene, they learned that Almendarez had driven his truck up on ramps and put blocks behind the back wheels, so he could work on it. Somehow, one of the blocks came loose, and the pickup fell on Almendarez, Newton said.
Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Dana Ashmore pronounced Almendarez dead at the scene. Rowles said that Ashmore ordered an autopsy be performed on Almendarez' body, and the preliminary findings ruled it an accidental death.
