TRINITY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A two-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 287 between Groveton and Corrigan late Monday night resulted in two people being sent to area hospitals for treatment of serious injuries.
According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred about nine miles south of Groveton.
The preliminary crash report shows that at about 9 p.m., Darrell Easterling, 20, of Centerville, had stopped his 1998 Chevrolet pickup on the shoulder of U.S. 287 after he hit a deer. Easterling was outside his truck when a northbound 2018 Honda passenger car driven by Melissa Mijares, 45, of El Paso, struck the pickup from behind.
"Investigators believe the force of the collision caused the Chevrolet to strike [Easterling]," the press release stated.
According to posts on the Groveton Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page, they were advised while they were on their way to the wreck scene that they would need to set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter.
A medical helicopter transported Easterling to the Conroe Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. An ambulance took Mjiares to CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial Hospital in Lufkin.
"Please pray for all involved and for our first responders," the Groveton VFD Facebook post state
The Groveton VFD remained on the scene for a while longer and assisted with traffic control, the Facebook post stated.
The wreck is still under investigation.
