SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) -

Only 161 students from across the country were named the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

Those students are preparing to meet President Donald Trump next month, and one of our very own from right here in the Pineywoods earned a spot in that group.

San Augustine’s Mikayla Slaydon is valedictorian of her high school. Slaydon says that throughout the trials life has thrown at her, she made it her duty to overcome it all, and this accomplishment is one of the things she has to show for it.

Slaydon's principal and counselor nominated her to be a part of the U.S. Presidential Scholars. Starting in September, she went through a two-part process to be qualified and out 5200 candidates, Slaydon was chosen.

“It feels crazy,” Slaydon said. “When I got the email I ran to my counselor's office because I knew she'd be excited. She cried, my principal cried and my superintendent cried. I was just very excited.”

After graduation, Slaydon plans to attend Texas A&M University and pursue and degree in biochemistry.
She will be traveling to our nation’s capital on June 24 to meet President Trump.
