AUSTIN, TX (KTRE) - A dynasty is building for Grapeland golf.
On Tuesday afternoon, the school brought home the UIL Golf state title in boys competition. Over two days at Roy Kizer Golf Course, the Sandies shot a 626. They beat De Leon by 13 shots. This makes the second straight year to bring home the championship.
"They played well," Cannon Earp said. "We knew going in we had a chance to compete. We were up by eight after day one so we knew we had to play."
On the individual side Rick Gutenberg brought home the individual championship, shooting a 136 over two days.
"He had a great couple of day," Earp said. 'He is solid and consistent. He might say he missed a few chances but he did what he needed to do and defend his individual title from last year."
Frauenberger will be back next year.
"We will have a chance to win three straight and that is special," Earp said. "He had a chance to win his freshman year but he had a wrist injury that hindered him."
Grapeland was not the only team from Deep East Texas looking for titles at the event. Douglass finished in 9th place as a team but their top performer Trevor Roquemore finished in second place after winning a playoff against Roy Moya.
Grapeland seniors Brayden Cheatham and Case Boyd finished tied for fourth in the individual standings. Cheatam finished in the top 10 all four years of his careers. Jason Bobbitt and Dylan Duhon will be returning to join Frauenberger in defending the title next year.
"It will be some big shoes to fill losing those two seniors," Earp. "We will have a lot of work to do to come back. We have just 5 kids in the program and lose two. We will need to get to work a little bit".
