LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Three Lufkin High School athletes are getting ready to play at the next level.
Chris Thompson with the Panther basketball team will be going to Panola College in Carthage. Thompson has been a role player for the past two years with Lufkin.
"I have dreamed of this moment for a long time," Thompson said. "The recruiting process is crazy. Sometime,s you just ask yourself if this is what you want to do. Then you get those right schools to call, and it makes it worth it."
Thompson' ultimate goal is to get classwork done and be noticed by a four-year school.
"This is the perfect setup for Chris," said basketball coach JT McManus. "It is far enough he can get his stuff done but close enough that he can come home on the weekends and see his family. It is a chance. That's all you need. There is some great NBA-level talent in the Region XIV schools. He will get his chance."
On the female side, Kate Knowles and Yasmine Gonzalez both signed with LSU-Eunice to play soccer.
"This is something I have wanted to do since I was 12," Knowles said. "It was a goal I set early with my select team in Houston."
The two players will be part of a new soccer program.
"It is cool to do this," Gonzalez said. "I mean they don't have their own girls yet. It is brand new. We get to play with players coming in from all over. It's great to be with Kate there since we have played together since we were little kids."
