The baseball and softball playoffs had plenty of big moments in the Pineywoods on Thursday night.
Grayson Rodriguez and the Central Heights Blue Devils would take down their rival Central 8-0 at Jaycees field in Nacogdoches. Rodriguez had 11 strikeouts and allowed one hit in the game. The Blue Devils hold a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 and possibly 3 will be back in Nacogdoches at Jaycees field on Saturday afternoon.
In a rematch of last years' regional final, Woden took down Groveton 10-0 in game 1 of their series. The Eagles' Drew Shifflet pitched a complete game 1 hitter. Game 2 will be at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin on Friday at 5. If a game 3 is needed it will follow game 2.
In softball action, The Central Lady Bulldogs were looking to be only the third team in school history to make it to a regional final. The team had a win-or-go-home situation in Bryan against Grandview in a game that lived up to the hype.
Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and lead 5-2 in the fourth. The Lady Zebras would score 4 runs in the sixth to take their first lead of the game. With a runner on third and Jaryn Sprinkle representing the tiling run at the plate, Grandview would get the strike out to end the game and win 8-6. Grandview extended their winning streak to 38 straight wins.
