LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Update:

From the Lufkin Police Department: The shooting victim is identified as Ashleigh Elijah, 24, from Lufkin. Ashleigh Elijah, 24, of Lufkin, has been declared “medically dead,” however she is still on life support so her organs will be kept viable for donation. Her family made the selfless decision and they have been coordinating with a transplant team so others may live. Please pray for her family, friends and young daughter in this difficult time.?

The shooter, Andre Woods, 21, of Lufkin, remains in the Angelina County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is currently charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting occurred as Woods and Elijah argued between two homes at 606 and 608 Chester St. around 5:15 p.m. Friday. Elijah had recently moved to Houston but was visiting her best friend for the weekend when the incident occurred. Witnesses said Woods told Elijah’s new boyfriend that they were still romantically involved. In response to this, Elijah told Woods to keep her name out of his mouth. They also argued about Woods telling Elijah’s best friend’s boyfriend that the baby her best friend was carrying was actually his.

Woods then shot Elijah in the abdomen with a low-caliber rifle. After shooting her the first time, he walked away, but then returned saying “(expletive) my aim is good” and shot her in the head at close range.

Woods fled on foot into a wooded area nearby immediately following the shooting and was taken into custody roughly three hours later as officers searched an established perimeter. Officers thanked neighbors for their detailed accounts of where Woods fled, as that ultimately led to his arrest.“The info they gave really helped us narrow down where to search for about 30 residences and confirmed that our perimeter was going to be effective,” one officer said.

Lufkin Police Department says a man has been taken into custody in relation to a woman being shot in the 600 block of Chester Street Friday evening.
