Lufkin's Yami Valdez heading to Cisco for softball

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - After three successful years with the Lady Pack softball team, senior Yami Valdez is heading to Cisco College to start her college career.

"I am excited to get to go," Valdez said. "In 10th grade I was like, 'Am I good enough to go?' and then I talked to their coach, my coach and my family and I was like, 'I guess I am.'"

As a sophomore, Valdez was awarded 1st team all-district, 1st team all-county and 1st team all state. As a junior she picked up honorable mention for all-district. So far as a senior Valdez has a 1st team all-district nod.

"She is a leader for us," head coach Shelby Holcomb said. "She leads by example on the field but she is also a vocal leader and our captain. She only had one out. She is going to start at Cisco. They are bringing in over 20 girls to the program and their coach has not promised Yami a position. That will not stop her. She promised herself that she would be starting as a freshman. She has a fire lit under her and nothing is going to stop her."
