NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Random acts of kindness by a Nacogdoches fifth grader didn't go unnoticed by his teachers and friends at Raguet Elementary.

On Friday, D.J. Sanders accepted a Student Hero Award presented by Dr. Keven Ellis, the State Board of Education member for District 9.

D.J. was shy about the recognition, but among his friends, he eagerly shows compassion. He helped an injured teacher, carried books for students, and provided them pats on the back for encouragement.

"The neat thing about this award it's not about academics. It's not about sports,” Ellis said. “It's about doing something kind and about something nice and being a really, really good person, and I think that's what really exemplifies this young man."

Only 15 award recipients are selected statewide, one from each district of the state board of education.
