POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A man and a woman died in a fiery one-vehicle crash that occurred on FM 942 about 10 miles northeast of Livingston on Saturday.

According to a press release, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to and investigated the wreck, which occurred at about 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The preliminary crash report shows that Jerry Smith, 74, of Livingston, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup east on FM 942.

“The pickup was reportedly traveling at an unsafe speed and drove off the roadway to the right,” the press release stated. “The driver overcorrected to the left, crossed back over the roadway, and struck the wood line and caught on fire.”

A Polk County justice of the peace pronounced Jerry Smith and Katie Smith, 75, of Livingston, dead at the scene of the wreck. Katie Smith was a passenger in the pickup with Jerry Smith.

The wreck is still under investigation.
