Wooded Area Burned Out Of Control

A massive fire engulfed part of a wooded area Sunday afternoon near the Rivercrest community.

Firefighters aren't sure what started the blaze, but the inferno quickly spread out of control. None of the nearby homes were evacuated, but thick black smoke filled the sky as trees and leaves burned.

There was a similar fire Saturday in the same area.

Elvis Brooks, president of the Rivercrest/Redland VFD, said, "We have no idea what started it. We had one in there [Saturday] afternoon that we think started from an electrical line being down, so this could be from it. We don't know."

Moffett, Rivercrest and Central volunteer fire departments helped control the blaze, along with volunteers from the Angelina County Firefighters Rehab.
