LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A year after being selected by the Houston Astros in the MLB draft, former Lufkin Panther Trey Cumbie has once again been drafted.
This time it was by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 390th pick in the 13th round. After being drafted by Houston last season, Cumbie decided to return to school for his junior season.
The left handed pitcher, earned second team American Athletic Conference Honors this past season that saw the Houston Cougars make it to the Chapel Hill Regional in the NCAA Tournament.
Cumbie made he conference honor roll 5 times this season and was a national pitcher of the week in February.
His accolades also include a preseason all American nod.
In his sophomore year, Cumbie brought home the school's first First Team All-American honor since 2006.
