LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - After operating in the Lufkin community for 40 years the city's only Christian bookstore is closing its doors for good.
"This has not ever been our store it's his store," said Christian Words and Works co-owner Bonnie Mead. "We wouldn't be here for what he's done because he's opened the doors and closed the doors.
Bonnie and Billy Mead sit and reminisce on the Christian gift and bookstore they opened in 1978.
"We love it," Bonnie Mead said. "We just love buying the product, seeing people buy the bibles and helping people."
It's sad for them to see it go, but it's also sad for the many customers that shop.
"I've been shopping here since Day 1," said customer Linda Stout. "One of my most treasured things that I have for Christmas is a slow glow of the manger scene that I bought in 1978."
"It's going to be tremendously missed," said customer Alex Alexander. "This has been a store that you come through and maybe see some of the things that you don't have."
The couple plans to retire August 1, 2018, and spend their time doing other things
"We're going to go back and enjoy our glory days without work," Bonnie Mead said.
But before they close their doors to the store, they're hoping someone will come and pick up the pieces.
"We're hoping someone will decide to go ahead and open another one," Bonnie Mead said. "We've had several that's opened and closed since we've been here."
For the next few weeks they want to use this time to celebrate.
"We're just pleased that we were able to serve the community here and serve Lufkin and this whole area," Billy Mead said.
Aug. 1 will make exactly 40 years the store has been open. It's also the last day the doors will be open.
The store will be giving away prizes on July 28 to the 10 customers who have shopped there the most. The store is located in the 500 block of Chestnut Street in Lufkin.
