LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Illegal dumping is on the rise in Angelina County.

Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said his deputies are stepping up their patrols, and they are ready to take action against offenders.

“We shouldn't have to live in a county that's littered up the way it is,” Sanches said. “We shouldn’t have to put up with it, and we're not going to put up with.”

According to Deputy Donald Carroll, if you're driving and trash blows out, you could face consequences if you don't stop to pick it up.

However, with illegal dumping, some people become victims.

A few months ago a couple could’ve spent almost $9,000 removing dumped tires from their property.

“We got one of the main actors in this area that was contributing to most of this, and he got put in jail for that,” Carol said.

A grant program is being set in stone to help those who can't afford to remove trash thrown on their property.

Sanches said the sheriff's office will continue doing what they can to make sure Angelina County stays clean.

“It litters up our county; it’s not good for the environment, and it makes the county look bad," Sanches said.
