NEWTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 20-year-old Jasper man died in a tragic drowning accident at a swimming area in Newton County Saturday evening.

According to a press release, the Newton County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a possible drowning at the Backwoods Beach swimming area located between Trout Creek and Bon Wier on County Road 4096 about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

NCSO deputies, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens, and Trout Creek first responders were dispatched out to the scene.

Witnesses told authorities that Devonta Rokell Jones, 20, was on a zip line and a friend was waiting at the bottom to help him to shore. Jones, who didn't know how to swim, landed in deep water, the press release stated.

"According to witnesses, efforts by friends to rescue the victim failed," the press release stated.

TPW game wardens found Jones' body near where he was last seen at about 9:07 p.m. Saturday. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Connie Smith pronounced Jones dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy, the press release stated.
