Police Catch Alleged Cigarette Thieves

Lufkin police have finally caught up with a couple they call cigarette thieves.

Thirty-two year-old Janet Deniece Hartman and 35-year-old MelvinWayne Rogers, Jr., both of Lufkin, are in jail charged with theft. Police tracked down the pair Wednesday morning after their fifth alleged robbery.

Hartman and Rogers are suspected of stealing cartons of cigarettes and ten gallons of gas from area convenience stores. There's also a robbery charge pending against them from a weekend theft. In that case, Rogers reportedly pointed a gun at a cashier who chased Hartman out of the store.

Hartman reportedly goes into stores asking for a couple cartons of cigarettes. When the cashier puts them on the counter, she'll ask for another carton. Once the clerk turns around, Hartman takes off with the cigarettes.
