by Jessica Cervantez

September 16th, is an important day in the Hispanic culture, it's Mexican Independence Day.

Samantha Luna and Priscilla Maurd will be honored in a celebration on Sunday honoring Mexican Independence Day.

Every year, September 16th is celebrated in commemoration of Mexico's first proclamation of independence from Spain in 1810.

In honor of the independence, ladies are chosen to compete in raising money for their church to be crowned the queen and princess. They say this is a good way to celebrate their heritage.

Luna, who is this year's princess, said, "It's important to me and my family because my dad is from Mexico and it's something we celebrate every year."

The celebration will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lufkin. Mass will begin at 12:00 p.m., with activities beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to come out.
