A house fire that occurred north of Jasper Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a 43-year-old man.

Chief Deputy Glenn Blank with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man has been identified as Steven Cochran. Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Brett Holloway pronounced Cochran dead at the scene.

According to a post on the Jasper Fire Department’s Facebook page, the department was dispatched out to a home about seven miles north of Jasper on U.S. Highway 96 at about 4:30 p.m. to assist the Lake Rayburn Fire Department.

No one else was injured in the fire, the Facebook post stated.

Blank said that Cochran was disabled and had been confined to a wheelchair.

“Please keep the family and friends of the deceased in your prayers,” the Facebook post stated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
