Diboll police vehicle involved in wreck that sends several to hospital

DIBOLL, TX (KTRE) - Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers investigated a wreck on Wednesday night that involved a police vehicle.

The wreck occurred on US 59 South and Hines Street, according to DPS, at around 7 p.m. The preliminary investigation by DPS states that a marked Diboll Police Department patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated was driving southbound when it struck a westbound 2002 Ford car in the passenger side on Hines Street. The officer driving the police vehicle is identified as Gerardo Munoz, 30, of Diboll. Munoz was taken to CHI St. Luke's Hospital where he was treated and released.

DPS identified the driver of the Ford as Miguel Yanez, 38, of Diboll. Yanez and two passengers, Tina Bayne, 46 and Kasha Alcorta, 20, were taken to Woodland Heights Hospital in Lufkin for treatment. Bayne was then transported to Hermann Hospital in Houston, DPS said.

DPS says the crash is still under investigation.

The following statement was released by DPS; it was updated a short time later with a correction: the Ford was hit in the passenger side, they said, not the driver's side.
