LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT/KATV) -

A new program at the Little Rock Police Department serves a dual purpose.

According to KATV, if you call the LRPD's non-emergency line between the hours of 9:30 to 6 you'll likely speak to six young adults between the ages of 18 and 21.

They're part of the department's renewed cadet program.

Sergeant Dewana Phillips, the program supervisor, says they're serving an important role as part of the department's new telephone reporting unit.

"With the conception of this, it was the thought that this would be a way to take some of the calls off of patrol and also calls off of communications all in an effort to still give the citizen what they need, but maybe not with a unit coming out and them waiting for that unit," Phillips said.

Cadets now field all police-related 3-1-1 calls and non-emergency calls.

They have the ability to take simple reports over the phone that at one point may have required an officer to be dispatched.
