POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A woman died early Thursday morning after she was struck by a Texas Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle on U.S. Highway 59 near the Polk-San Jacinto county line.
According to a press release, the crash occurred about one mile north of the Trinity River Bridge at the Polk-San Jacinto county line at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. At the time, a DPS trooper was traveling south on U.S. 59 in a marked patrol vehicle.
"The preliminary crash investigation indicates a female pedestrian wearing dark colored clothing, who was reportedly walking in the inside lane of the roadway, was struck by the vehicle," the press release stated. "The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Polk County justice of the peace."
At this time, DPS is not releasing the victim's name or age.
"This is an ongoing investigation," the press release stated. "No additional information is available at this time."
Rhonda Oaks, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said that U.S. 59 remains closed near the Trinity River Bridge. traffic is being diverted onto the southbound shoulder, she said.
"Prepare for delays," Oaks said.
