LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Before entering play in the District of Doom, newest member Van High School will get a tough week 2 non-district test.
The Vandals (1-0) will travel to Gilmer and take on the Buckeyes (1-0) in the Red Zone Game of the Week. Both teams picked up week 1 victories to open the season.
Gilmer survived a high scoring game at Atlanta and walked away with a 47-41 victory. Van hosted Alvarado and had an easier go at it, winning 34-7.
Gilmer should prove to be a tough test for the Vandals but both teams have similar records of the past two years. Since the start of 2016,the Buckeyes have gone 24-5 while Van has gone 23-4. Van is coming off of a season where they lost a lot of talent but they do have talent still left on the team for coach Jared Moffatt.
Gilmer is expected to be a district championship contender in 6-4A DII. Expect to see a strong running game behind Bran Webb.
Kickoff for the Red Zone Week 2 Game of the Week is set for 7:30 PM at Gilmer's Jeff Traylor Stadium.
