LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - National Grandparents Day isn't until Sunday, Sept. 9, but students at Dunbar Primary School in Lufkin celebrated early by welcoming their grandparents to lunch on Wednesday.
The elementary school hosted picnics either inside, outside, or in the campus science lab. If grandparents were unavailable, or students did not have any who could attend, the school offered foster grandparents who volunteered to eat with kids. Students were also allowed to invite a "special guest" -- namely, parents or other relatives.
"It makes them feel, first of all, that they're loved, and when they have that feeling they're going to do a lot better in school," said school counselor Andrea Walker. "Grandparents are very important pillars in the community."
National Grandparents Day is celebrated each year on the Sunday after Labor Day. September was chosen as the date for the observance to symbolize the "autumn" years of life.
"It's a blessing to celebrate them," Walker added.
