Expo Center Is No Longer A Shelter

by Ramonica R. Jones

It took two days to clean up the expo center in Lufkin after hundreds of evacuees went back to their homes on the Gulf Coast. It's clean now, but county leaders said they'd never seen so much garbage and clutter in one place.

The expo enter was opened up as an emergency shelter. Toilets were clogged up and there was litter everywhere.

The expo center can hold up to 7,000 people, but it's not equipped to handle people all day and night.

Hundreds of people stayed in the expo center Saturday night. It was the last facility to open as a temporary shelter for Rita evacuees.
