We Want The Lights On!

by Donna McCollum

There are thousands without power, but some are enjoying the convenience for the first time in days. A welcome sight in East Texas is having an electric restoration crew in your neighborhood.

More than 1800 workers are trying to get the lights on. TXU central office reports just under 30,000 TXU customers will have power restored by the end of this week. Their front line person is more realistic. Community relations manager Mike Aiken said, "I don't know. I guess it's possible Friday, Saturday, but I'm looking at more toward next week, Monday."

The projection is dimmer for members of the Deep East Texas Electric Co-op. 22,000 customers served by lines running through the middle of woods, covered in downed timber may have to wait up to four weeks.

Electric co-op spokesman Richard Parker said, "There's not a question there will be some people affected for that period of time. Even if we get the 400 or so people that we need to do this."

No matter where crews work they begin with getting the primary lines hot first. Sometimes restoring residential can be hampered by downed lines. Electric crews 'cannot' restore power to homes with a damaged meter base. Customers with damaged electrical equipment should call an electrician to make the necessary repairs. Then power crews can restore electric service.

Also it's important to stay away from downed power lines. Some may still be live wires.
