ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Two men are in custody after someone spotted two suspicious-looking men walking down State Highway 94 in the Hudson area Thursday morning.
One man was carrying a rifle, and the other had body armor on, according to Hudson Police Chief Jimmy Casper. He said officers from both the Hudson PD and Lufkin PD assisted in the incident.
Casper said the call came in around 8 a.m. Thursday. Police officers arrived on the scene to talk to the two men after a concerned citizen called dispatch. However, before officers could talk to them, the two men took off running, and a foot pursuit ensued.
A Hudson PD officer was able to capture the man who had been carrying the rifle, but the other man was not caught at that time. However, the second suspect was caught and arrested later Thursday afternoon
Casper said they did not put any schools or businesses on lockdown, but some daycares chose to go on lockdown to err on the side of caution.
Lt. David Young with the Lufkin Police Department said the two men broke into an LPD officer's truck at Greenbriar Apartments at about 7 a.m. and stole the rifle and body armor.
The LPD officer had put his equipment in his truck and locked it because he was planning to go to firearms training later Thursday, Young said. The officer then took his wife's car to take their children to school. In that 30-minute window, the suspects allegedly broke into the officer's truck and stole his AR-15 rifle and his body armor.
A Hudson police officer spotted them walking with it just past Another Kids Daycare and chased them when they ran, Young said. He added that the man with the body armor had it on under his shirt.
Young said the man who was caught with the AR-15 rifle was Juan Pablo Solis, 17, of Hudson. Casper said the second suspect has been identified as Zachary Springer, who lives in the Lufkin-Hudson area.
Authorities have recovered the AR-15 and the body armor, Young said. He added that they recovered another gun that was stolen from the apartment complex. More charges could be pending, Young said.
