Lufkin member: SBE plans to keep ‘heroic defenders’ in Alamo curriculum

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - On Thursday, the State Board of Education said they will keep the words "all heroic defenders" in the state's social studies curriculum.

However, the controversy brewed about a week ago, when an external advisory group recommended to the State Board of Education on removing the words "heroic defenders" to describe those in the Texian army in 1836 battle.

"We actually met yesterday, and I'm proud to state that the State Board of Education has added back the curriculum standards on a preliminary basis. We still have to have a final vote that the defenders of the Alamo will be listed as heroes," said Keven Ellis, the Lufkin district representative with the State Board of Education.

Ellis said the board will vote Friday for final approval.
