Report Price Gouging - Tues., 9/27/05 @ 7:30 p.m.
Posted by R. Smith, KTRE-TV, Lufkin, Texas

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has warned about the continued threat of price gouging as his office received hundreds of reports over the weekend about businesses that tried to exploit displaced Texans who fled coastal areas in the wake of Hurricane Rita.

Attorney General Abbott urged Texans to continue filing complaints of price gouging. Consumers can call the Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 252-8011 or file their complaints on the Attorney General’s Web site at
www.oag.state.tx.us. (You can click here for the attorney general’s secure online complaint form.)

Abbott urged consumers to be as specific as possible when filing complaints, providing information such as the business name, address or specific location, contact information, and the price the business advertises and actually charges for a particular item. Consumers are also encouraged to retain receipts and even take photos of the advertised prices, if possible. Digital photos can be e-mailed to the Attorney General at
greg.abbott@oag.state.tx.us.

Mother Looking for Daughter - Tues., 9/27/05 @ 7:22 p.m.
Posted by R. Smith, KTRE-TV, Lufkin, Texas

We are posting this e-mail we received through our rita@ktre.com e-mail address from a woman in Victoria, Texas who is trying to located her daughter in the Milam, Texas area. If anyone reading this has information that will help her, please contact her at the e-mail address or phone number that she provides at the end of her message. Thanks for your help.

I don't know that you will be able to help, but perhaps you can give me any kind of information available to you.

My daughter evacuated from Brazoria Co., TX and went to Milam, TX in advance of the hurricane. At that time it looked like Rita was going to hit directly where I'm at, Victoria TX, so instead of coming here, she went to Milam with her boyfriend's family who has relatives there. We were communicating several times a day until the storm went through, and no one has heard from her or the others since.

I cannot get any calls through to the phone number she gave me there. I'm desperate to get any kind of information you or anyone else can give me. At this time, I have only been able to find little bits of info over the Internet that have only caused me to become even more worried.

My daughter's name is Jessica Barlow, her boyfriend Brent Steele, his mother Sherry Steele, and her daughters Mollie and Lindsay. I only have the last names of the people they were staying with in Milam---the Everetts (sp?) and Bradshaws, and they live in a mobile home. I think she said it was in a mobile home park, but I'm not sure of that. If it helps to locate them, their phone number is (409)-625-3441, but I still am unable to get a call through from here.

Please get back with me if you can find out anything from there, or forward this e-mail to anyone else that might be able to help locate them. My daughter is very good about keeping in touch, especially in times like this, and I know that she would have called me long ago if there were any way for her to. Thank you!”

Update from Sam Houston Electric Co-Op - Tues., 9/27/05 @ 12:55 p.m.
Posted by R. Smith, KTRE-TV, Lufkin, Texas

The good news for residents in the Livingston-Polk County area who are customers of the Sam Houston Electric Co-Op is that help is on the way.  The challenge, however, is to get transmission lines fed from the south restored, cutting through piles of fallen trees and working around the enormous amount of evacuee traffic.  All 64,000 Sam Houston Electric Co-Op customers were without power over the weekend. Customers east of Highway 59 took the biggest hit, and that part of the system will have to be almost entirely rebuilt.  That could take up to two weeks.  Customers west of Highway 59 should get their power back this week.

Sam Houston Electric Co-Op serves ten East Texas counties.  They ask when your lights do come back on, please conserve power until the entire system stabilizes.  Keith Stapleton says they have 1,000 linemen and tree clearing crews working.  They say additional crews should arrive in a couple of days.
