Labor Unions Approve Contract With Lufkin Industries

by Larry Little

Labor unions at Lufkin Industries have approved their contracts with the company. The final vote came Sunday night from all three unions at Lufkin Industries to accept a three year contract.

The previous contract expired, and they had been in negotiations for one week. Many feared a possible strike.

The new contract involved changes in wages, pensions, and health insurance. Some employees are happy with the vote, but still have mixed feelings.

"I think the vote went pretty good. The company offered more than they did last time. They could have done better on the insurance. All and all, I think it did pretty good. A lot of people don't want to be off with the hurricane, so you are happy you didn't go on strike... yes and no," says Lufkin Industries Employee William Calhoun.

Officials at Lufkin Industries say they will let the union disclose the details of that new contract.
