Lufkin Firefighters Dealing With Sawdust Fire

by Stuart Burson

Lufkin firefirefighters have been busy lately. They've been making sure a fire at the old Louisiana Pacific sawmill off Old Mill Road remains under control.

Downed powerlines caused by hurricane Rita have caught some old piles of sawdust on fire.  The fire has been smoldering for several days, but Tuesday, winds pushed the fire outside the perimeter firefighters had established.

The Lufkin Fire Department, with help from the Texas Forest Service established a new perimeter Tuesday  afternoon.

The fire could continue to smolder for several more days.
