Debris Dangers

by Ramonica R. Jones

Members of the National Fire Prevention Team are in East Texas this week. They're trying to spread the word about post-storm fire dangers and out of control burning.

There are fire restrictions in effect for all four national forests and grasslands in Texas. There are also burn bans in effect for several area counties. Even though we got a lot of rain during Hurricane Rita, the ground is still dangerously dry.

Diana Reck, fire prevention specialist, said, "It's heavy, heavy debris that people are wanting to get rid of, and with the hot, dry temperatures, there is potential to have fires."

It is also illegal to burn some storm debris within the city limits. Check with authorities in your town about those laws.
