Historical Hospital Drop

by Ramonica R. Jones

Cancer treatment at a Lufkin hospital has gone high-tech. A linear accelerator was literally dropped into Memorial Hospital. The device will help doctors treat cancer safer and more precisely than in the past.

A linear accelerator is a device that produces radiation to treat cancer. Its benefits include fewer side effects and higher cure rates.

Dr. Sid Roberts of Memorial Health Systems of East Texas said, "This machine is very versatile. We can treat, certainly, larger tumors in larger areas, but we can also be very focused and precise - say around the prostate gland - or for small tumors in the brain that might be close to critical structures, such as the optic pathways."

The T.L.L. Temple Foundation provided a generous grant to help Memorial Hospital get its new linear accelerator.
