National Volunteers Help East Texans

by Ramonica R. Jones

Hundreds of storm victims spent the day in downtown Lufkin. Both local and Gulf Coast storm victims are lining up to get help.

The American Red Cross has set up a center to help them get the assistance they need to put their lives back together. Many people are still without food, electricity, and water because of the storm. Red Cross volunteers from all over the country are in East Texas to help them.

Volunteer, Andy Rawdon, said, "If they can indicate that their pre-disaster address - as we're calling it and we're using zip codes to confirm that - is within the zones that have been defined as an emergency zone, we are able, as the Red Cross, to provide them with financial assistance."

The service center is located at 701 North First Street near the civic center in Lufkin. It will be open at 9:00 a.m. every day until there is no longer a need for it.
