Hundreds Have Gotten Post-Rita Financial Help

by Ramonica R. Jones

Hundreds of people are still lining up to get financial help from the Red Cross center in Lufkin.

Many storm victims are having a hard time picking up the pieces after Hurricane Rita. They've come from as far away as Port Arthur and as close as Corrigan for assistance. Some are still without electricity and water. Others aren't able to return home because there's nothing left to return to.

Glenna Harkness, site manager, said, "Red Cross does not provide assistance due to power outages. I am not aware of an agency that provides assistance due to power outages. This is for people that have had structural damage to their house."

More than 6,000 storm victims have tried to get help from the service center in Lufkin since it first opened last week. About 600 people have actually received financial assistance.
