Avian Flu Can Be Treated

by Ramonica R. Jones

There's been a lot of talk lately about the Avian flu, also known as the bird flu. The Avian flu is a virus similar to influenza.

It's called the Avian flu because, many years ago, the virus only attacked birds and avian species. The only known treatment for sick patients is Tamiflu.

Dr. Karina Urquia of Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin said, "The U.S. has available two million doses. The U.S. is counting on a vaccine that has recently been developed that is supposed to be effective against the Avian flu."

Doctors say the same precautions you take to avoid the regular flu should also be used to keep from getting the Avian flu. Frequent handwashing and covering your mouth when you cough are some good tips to follow.

Parents should also keep their sick kids out of school and at home.
