Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Lou Ballard Byrd, 91, will be Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 2:00 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Dammon of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church and Rev. Bob Matchett of Katy, Texas officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
Katie Lou Ballard Byrd passed away October 9, 2005 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
She was born August 22, 1914 in Pine Bluff, AR. to Wiltie Tucker Ballard and Robert Carroll Ballard who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Howard Deems Byrd in 1972 and her son, James Howard Byrd in 2005.
Mrs. Byrd was a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church since 1945 and a Children’s Sunday School Teacher and a Senior Dept. Leader for many years. She was a Nacogdoches resident since 1930 and graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1932. She retired as a bookkeeper for Mize Ladies Clothing Manufacturing after 35 years, was a cashier for Nacogdoches ISD for 8 Years and a hostess for Old University Building. Katie was well known for her exceptional quilting, tatting, crochet, and baking. She also had a green thumb, especially for African violets and Confederate roses. Her favorite read daily book was the Bible, especially Psalms 40. She was an inspirational cancer survivor.
She is survived by daughter-in-law, Janiece Crisp Byrd of Nacogdoches; brother, Robert Ballard of Tyler; grandson, James Howard Byrd II of Nacogdoches; granddaughter, Cristie Janiece Ellison and husband S. Sgt. Troy Duaine Ellison and infant son Luke Wayne Ellison of Moore, OK. Nieces, Carolyn Wallace and husband Wyatt of Huntsville, Nancy Pase and husband Joe of Lufkin, Adelle Bobo of Douglass, Audrey Taylor of San Augustine, and Mary Ann Norcross of Caldwell; nephews, Ray Norcross of Caldwell, Merle Norcross of Waco; numerous other nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. She has left many cherished friends at Northway Retirement Apartments.
Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited for refreshments at the home of Janiece Byrd, 717 Village Gate (N.E. Stallings Drive in Park Village).
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the service.
Memorials may be donated to the Building Fund of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church, 1711 South St. Nacogdoches, Tx. 75964.
