East Texas Timber Wiped Out By Rita

The local timber industry lost more than 500 million cubic feet of timber in Hurricane Rita. The Texas Forest Service detailed the damage Tuesday in a slide presentation to the Lufkin Host Lions Club.

Some of the destruction includes blown over trees and fallen limbs. The amount damaged almost equals the total amount of timber harvested in 2004.

The most damage happened in the Angelina National Forest in Jasper and Zavalla.

The Texas Forest Service predicts serious implications, including potential water quality issues and the need for reforestation.
